Parsnip's brilliant design helps them (and other carrot family seeds) to germinate during the cool wet times of fall and early spring. Not surprisingly, these seeds have very poor long-term viability. Under regular storage conditions for seeds or spices, (cool, dark and dry), their viability and strength will barely make it through to the following spring. Part of this viability challenge can be solved, through cold storage of the seeds. This storage method mimics how they are designed to overwinter. It is in the design and character of carrot family seeds to ripen during summer and fall off in the late fall winter or spring, and to germinate quickly. Other plant seeds, that are designed to fall deeper into the soil, can still be viable after decades. These more streamlined seed types, overwinter deep enough that they germinate and grow later in the spring or summer, when the soil warms.The physical traits of a plant, and its seeds, reflects their nutritional and healing powers. The carrot family seeds, like carrots, parsnips, dill, fennel, angelica and many others, are all loaded with volatile oils, that protects them from pathogens in their environment, and also makes them powerful species and medicine. The oil from these seeds, like their viability, is strong at first but very short-lived. The oils mostly evaporate in a couple months, if left on the plant. Wild carrot seeds, which can be used as a contraceptive, or to increase fertility, must be stored fresh, in a freezer, to remain effectives for a year, until you can pick her fresh again. This family has a very short storage time, both medicinally and in terms of viability. By the time their seeds are dry enough to store in an airtight container, the oils will be mostly gone.When we eat seeds or collect them to plant, we are working with the plant’s essence, which will heal and nurture us, as she healed and nurtured the land where she grew.Join us at The Sacred Gardener School in the Spring. The Daily Rites of Passage
It has been said or imagined that for our ancestors, all of life was ceremonial. While that may be true in the some idealistic sense, in the moment to moment reality our days are not all ceremony and never were.In the sense that we’re here dancing through each moment with divinity, yes, but there can’t be continual ceremony, it doesn’t work that way. It’s the long slow stretches of time and enduring the lean times that is part of what gives ‘ceremonial time’ its potency. During our days and years there are poignant moments in the flow of time. In this river of time the ceremonial points are the rapids and waterfalls, or the sharp turns of direction. And we celebrate the times when we are filled with returning salmon.As there are ceremonies that mark the transitions and major times in the year, so too are there ceremonial points in our days.As the sun rises each day and we are delivered from the dark cold night by Sun, and the light, colour and heat come back to the land. The dawn and sunrise is a truly miraculous ceremonial time when the world is awakened and our hearts with it. And like the sun dawning, when we first wake and rise from the underworld, this is a profound moment that everyone has, everyday.In that moment we come back into our bodies with our dreams and our night-passage still rolling through our heads. That’s big. But most of us do not wake up with the sun; breezing by our own awakening in our rush to get to…what?The sunset and darkening of the land and surrendering to sleep are equally profound and powerful times. In surrendering to the darkness and unconsciousness we are surrendering to the Gods and Goddesses of the unseen world that underlie this world. And we do this everyday without ever really even thinking about it.
